Glycerol

· It is a colorless, transparent, odorless, viscous liquid with a sweet taste and has hygroscopic properties. It is miscible with water and alcohols, amines, and phenols in any proportion, and its aqueous solution is neutral. It dissolves in 11 times ethyl acetate and about 500 times ether. It is insoluble in benzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulfide, petroleum ether, oils, and long-chain alcohols. It is flammable and can cause combustion and explosion when exposed to strong oxidizing agents such as chromium dioxide and potassium chlorate. It is also a good solvent for many inorganic salts and gases. It has no corrosive effect on metals and can be oxidized to acrolein when used as a solvent.
