China’s propylene glycol (PG) exports have maintained strong momentum in recent months. Customs data shows that export volume saw a sharp year-on-year jump, with overseas orders effectively absorbing domestic supply. Major destination markets cover Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Europe. Meanwhile, import volumes kept falling, which further consolidated China’s position as a key global PG supplier. Strong external demand partly offset sluggish domestic consumption from unsaturated polyester resin and coating sectors, where end-users only purchased on a need basis without large stockpiling.

In terms of price movement, Chinese FOB propylene glycol prices experienced volatile fluctuations. After a notable rally in the second quarter, spot prices retreated moderately in Q3 as some production units resumed operation and feedstock propylene oxide costs softened. Temporary plant maintenance offered intermittent price support, yet weak domestic downstream demand capped further gains. Industrial-grade PG traded within a relatively narrow range, while USP/food and pharma grades maintained clear price premiums due to stable demand from cosmetics, food additives and coolant applications.
Looking ahead, export performance will remain the core factor shaping PG prices. Market participants keep a close eye on overseas procurement sentiment, shipping costs and raw material swings. Given mixed fundamentals, the propylene glycol market is expected to stay range-bound in the short run. Exporters should watch destination-country policy changes and adopt flexible pricing strategies amid uncertain global chemical market conditions.
